How to Scrap your car in Singapore
UPDATE: you will also get cash on the spot, if you go through the scrap brokers (quotz). The LTA scrapyard process will net you a cheque a few weeks later.
Singapore cars are only allowed to have a 10 years COE, after which, LTA would allow you to extend 5 more years, for a pro-rated price, or you have to scrap the car.
For Option B, it is potentially more rewarding.
Do not wait till the last few days to export your car, the lesser days, the more rush for the secondhand dealer, and he will not offer a better price.
I used Option B, and to save troubles, I googled a lot and found
http://www.quotz.com.sg/how/scrap.php
Just key in your information, they will find the best export company that wants to take your car, Within a day, a lady from Quotz called me and quoted me a price that is higher than the LTA deregister values. From what I know, it is the best possible price.
I accepted and the dealer will call me directly.
The dealer did and I agreed to a date to send the car. However on the actual day, due to work, I did not drive to the company in the end.
And I learnt that really cannot wait till last minute. I waited till left 4-5 calendar days, and called up the dealer again. This time he refuse to take the car as it was too rushed.
Thankfully the Quotz customer service called me and offered me at another dealer, which quoted me a slightly lower price due to the rush job, and I just agreed to it...
For the new dealer, instead of driving to his company, he asked me to just drive to the open carpark opposite LTA (10 Sin Ming Drive, Singapore 575701).
Singapore cars are only allowed to have a 10 years COE, after which, LTA would allow you to extend 5 more years, for a pro-rated price, or you have to scrap the car.
Given that COE prices are now astronomical, probably double or triple of the original car costs... not many singaporeans would ever choose to extend the COE. Unless your car is super emo....
(Come to think of that, the government earns more selling that piece of paper than the car manufacturer selling a fully functional car)
When your 10 year COE is up, LTA will send you a transaction pin and allow you a few options to de-register your car.
Good news is you can get a few bucks from de-registering your car.
If you are trading in your car to an Authorised Dealer, chances are You can TRADE IN your car.
If you are not going to buy a new car, or has to deal with a Parallel Importer, you may have to DIY to deregister to scrap your car.
If you are not going to buy a new car, or has to deal with a Parallel Importer, you may have to DIY to deregister to scrap your car.
You can
a) scrapping your vehicle on your own with LTA
or b) sell to a broker to export your vehicle out.
Keep the transactional pin that LTA will mail you early.
- Obtain a Transaction Pin.* Please click here for more information on Transaction PIN.
- Submit an online application to authorise a submitter to de-register your vehicle at the scrap yard;
- Send the vehicle to one of the Appointed Scrap Yard Operators within 5 calendar days of your online application. Otherwise, the application will lapse and you will have to re-apply. Please note that your vehicle will remain registered until it is de-registered at the scrap yard; and

- (i) Duly completed de-registration application form;

- (iv) Road Tax Fees (if the road tax is outstanding at the point of vehicle de-registration).
- Land Transport Authority (LTA) will notify the last registered owner of the vehicle's de- registration, the details of any PARF/COE rebate(s) and/or arrears of road tax/late renewal fee(s), if applicable.

"Healthy" food contains more harmful sugar than you think - Best film ever
Sugar is the real villain.
It is so harmful to your body, but yet has escaped public attention for the past few decades. In fact, there are countries that provide subsidies to the production (for example, USA) and consumption (for example, Malaysia) of sugar.
And the interesting thing is, I have been eating healthier food, low-sugar, low salt, low fat products, especially those labelled as "HEALTHIER" choice.
And this guy, Damon Gameau, from the famed Super Size Me, the film that brought Mcdonalds to attention, has a new film, where he eats all the "healthier" food.
And guess what?
The healthier food, makes him SICK.
Taken from: http://www.news.com.au/lifestyle/health/damon-gameau-goes-super-size-on-the-sweet-stuff-in-shocking-sugar-experiment/story-fneuzkvr-1227127957935
Damon Gameau goes Super Size on the sweet stuff in shocking sugar experiment
IT’S been 10 years since Morgan Spurlock existed on just McDonald’s for a month in the groundbreaking film, Super Size Me.
Now our waistlines face a new threat, and another guinea pig has undergone some risky self-experimentation to try to make sense of it.
Australian TV actor and filmmaker Damon Gameau stars in That Sugar Film which will air in Australian cinemas in early 2015, in which he exists on “healthy” low-fat food with a high sugar content for 60 days.
The results are more shocking than anyone could have expected.
Within three weeks, the previously healthy Damon was feeling terrible all the time, lethargic and snapping at the slightest thing.
A visit to the doctor confirmed the worst — he had the beginnings of fatty liver disease.
The father-to-be put on 10cm of visceral fat around his waist, and was informed that he was on the fast-track to obesity. He was also told his mental functioning was “unstable”.
Damon had increased his intake to 40 teaspoons of sugar a day, just slightly more than that of the average teenager worldwide. Recommended daily intake is a maximum of nine teaspoons a day, or six for women.
He now believes labelling is deliberately ambiguous, and that we need to be conscious that every four grams of sugar equals a teaspoon of sugar.
Despite keeping his calories the same, Damon said he never seemed to feel full.
For breakfast, he would have low-fat yoghurt, cereal and apple juice. That contained 20 teaspoons of sugar.
“We’re not being dogmatic and saying people having to quit sugar, it’s just being aware,” he said. “Sugar’s now in 80 per cent of the processed food we’re eating. If we can remove that, that’s the first step towards making a change.”
The movie features cameos from Stephen Fry, Isabel Lucas and Brenton Thwaites, and king of food campaigners Jamie Oliver has called the film a “definite must-see”.
But will it convince people to change their habits?
There are now nearly six million Australians with fatty liver disease and only 6000 of those are caused by alcohol.
Type 2 diabetes is killing someone every six seconds worldwide, and Damon believes we’ve reached a point where we need to do something.
The creators of That Sugar Film have secured funding to create a educational program around the movie.
Its website offers tips, recipes and a study guide for kids, and will later grow into a larger hub, where people can take part in challenges such as cutting out sugar for 10 days.

Damon’s final meal was a full 40 teaspoons of sugar that could be found in an ordinary child’s school lunchbox. “Sadly, it was very easy to do and fitted comfortably into the small plastic container,” he wrote on his blog documenting his experiment.
“The last meal was for all the people out there, especially parents, who are led to believe they are doing the right and healthy thing for their children. They are making an effort yet are horribly let down by the lack of integrity in marketing and packaging strategies.”
THE LAST MEAL

Happy All Saints' Eve! (Happy halloween)
Happy All Saints' Eve!
Wait, what? you dont know that?
Oh well.. its the same as Halloween! =)
Halloween or Hallowe'en (/ˌhæləˈwiːn, -oʊˈiːn, ˌhɑːl-/; a contraction of "All Hallows' Evening"),[6] also known as Allhalloween,[7] All Hallows' Eve,[8] or All Saints' Eve,[9] is a yearly celebration observed in a number of countries on 31 October, the eve of the WesternChristian feast of All Hallows' Day.
I love halloween!
When i first started celebrating halloween, i have no idea what it means, or if there is any religious tones to it.
To me, it is just a nice day to enjoy, to have fun and eat lots of candies.
I dressed up as a vampire on our first halloween, and nope, I did not sparkle. I was a true-blue, "normal vampire.
Compared to our chinese' Lunar 7th Month Ghost Festival, Halloween is a much more fun day, we get to dress up...
have lots of candies
Play with a craving knife... and pumpkins
but the funny part of halloween that I would never understand...
How did halloween moves from "dress up scary shit" to "dress up as sluttish shit"?
halloween is weird with sluts, but no complains. |
Bring back halloween with the scary shits! =D

Singapore- we constraint our choices.
One of the contradiction in my life is that I do love Singapore, and the safe, comfortable environment it has provided me, BUT yet, I cannot wait to get out of Singapore, because of its sheer limitations.
As a city, Singapore is wonderful, everything works like clockwork, efficiently and safe.
But as a country, I crave for the mountains, the valleys, the large open space, the numerous points to visit, to work, to breathe.
I am not a hardcore outdoor person, in fact, I love lazing around in my home all weekends. But the lack of a countryside.... it bums me.
And one hope I have, is that I can migrate and let my kids grow up in a large country. Something that I had made up my mind when I was in Secondary school.
You see, as a secondary three student, I love Geography. It helps that I can score well in exams (another characteristic of Singaporeans, we deprive pleasure from scoring well in academic results), but there is sooo much more in geography.
I mean, look at these clouds, aren't they the most beautiful things?
The clouds formations....
the rocks, the volcano...
And then on some points, while I gear up for O'levels Geography, I realised the uncomfortable truth. There is no career for anyone in geography, in Singapore. The only way a degree in Geography that can pay itself is via teaching careers, maybe in secondary school, or a position in university (even so, only 1 Singapore university- NUS, has a geography department). And even so, the university position is on HUMAN geography, on how space can become a place, with humans' ideals and interactions.
Physical geography does not pay in Singapore because we do not have physical space.
Even if I excel in Geography in O levels and A levels (which I did), there is simply no proper physical geography course in NUS. While I was doing my economics degree (very practical, very singaporean, sue me) I took a few modules in Geography, and there were all human geography. No surprise here, where were we going to observe the rocks or clouds?
And the 16yo Sec 4 me, thinks.. what if I want to do oceanology? What if I like to study marine life? (I kid you not, when I was aged 16, I explored other careers, I knew I did not want to live in an office for 2/3 of my life. Of course when I graduated from university, I was brainwashed and lured to the financial industry. Sue me)
And what if I want to do theoretical physics? I was studying chemistry and physics at that time, and I realise research work (which is probably boring to the max) can be something I love to explore... extremely academic works, that probably has no practical value...
I forgot who was the Education Minister at that time, or where did I get the vibes, but I realised, at the tiny age of 16yo, that all these interesting, mind boggling careers would never get fulfilled in Singapore.
And I told myself, I want my children to grow up someplace where no matter what they want to purse, no matter what their talents are, they have an university, a workshop, or somewhere that they can learn and excel.
Just saying.
What if I want to be an astronaut? Or something related to space, I don't have to go to space, I can study it, like astronomy. I can peer at the stars, do my research and live happily.
Only I can't because my country only churns out bankers and engineers.
And this is why, at my age, before I churn out my kids, I am considering abandoning my whole life here for a much more difficult, a much more tough life in some other large countries.
Would I be more tired? yes.
would i be poorer? yes.
would i be more confused? yes.
would i be happier? I have no idea.
Singapore, you are terrific, but you are just too small.

Dating Websites - they are a good way to interact
I wrote about dating websites in a Quora question, and though of sharing it here.
____________________________________
Dating websites, or social websites are actually pretty decent.
Sure, there is a percentage of weird people. People with no good social skills, or desperate people who came to the websites with the wrong motives.
In fact, i even met cheaters and tricksters, who were out to trick people's money via some elaborate scams or friendship.
But by and large, majority of the people there are just people looking for friends, but similar to you, have a small social cycle.
It could be due to unfamiliarity due to moving from another city. It could be shyness. It could be due to heavy workload that leaves little time for making friends. Or it could be due to boring colleagues or acquaintances in workplace.
Or it could be just fate....
Majority of people are nice, and dating /friends websites are the best place to know more people and make friends. I made many good friends from these sites.
Even if you are the one with no social skills, the websites help to find people who can match to your characters.
Just make sure you google dating websites, google reviews. And please try the free, more fun versions before you paid for anything.
(I won't recommend any, but suffice to say www.okcupid.com is free!)
(The worst kind of people I find, are those who dont bother to be interesting, dont bother to be fashionable, dont have attractive qualities, yet complain the other people in the websites dont look like Victoria's Secrets Models. These people do badly in real life, and they carry the bad aura into these websites as well)

(The worst kind of people I find, are those who dont bother to be interesting, dont bother to be fashionable, dont have attractive qualities, yet complain the other people in the websites dont look like Victoria's Secrets Models. These people do badly in real life, and they carry the bad aura into these websites as well)

Facebook is no longer America-centric but World-centric
The notification icon in facebook that we all look for when we log in and to see did anyone commented or update something that would interests us...
the one in a shape of the globe...
the one in a shape of the globe...
From Wed, do you notice anything different?
Yup, the globe is no longer America-centric.
The globe is no longer show America. and is instead showing the other side of the globe. (I was informed that Americans logging in to facebook in America is still seeing the American-centric globe though)
The globe is now showing Europe - Asia - Africa.
You know, where the majority of Facebook's customers are.
Just 18.3% of facebook's active users are from USA or Canada.
Welcome to the World! =D

Holidays blues- reading some emails for coffee money!
Selamat Hari Raya!
Happy holidays.. its good to enjoy a weekend.. without dreading Monday! =)
Love it when you can sleep in on a monday.
Anyway, got bored of sitting around (thats my current hobby) and decided to go through my old stuff and found an old account that I had for years!
been sitting around, reading emails (nothing else) and surprisingly, accumulated enough cash for a nice decent meal!! heh heh
free money. this is a good monday!
Anyway the link is this - Get Paid To Read Emails - Click Here.
The payout is not a huge amount, compared to those paid survey things, but then u just click ur email and read it occasionally and get some coffee money. I think it is alright.
I am getting a starbucks, just to tell them how much I support them for paying for their barristers' degree
http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2014-06-16/starbucks-to-pay-part-of-college-tab-for-u-s-workers.html
Starbucks Corp. (SBUX), which has offered company stock to store employees for more than two decades, will now begin picking up most of the tab for workers to get a degree through Arizona State University online.
Starbucks employees who work at least 20 hours a week and enroll in the university’s online bachelor’s degree will get $6,500 -- about half of their tuition -- for the first two years, the company said in a statement. They will then get full tuition for the final two.
Enjoy your coffee!

Raw Food diet for Pets
Have been reading up on raw food diet for pets, and learned on the benefits and worries of this diet.
though for small treats for dogs, I will go for some good brands of dog and cat treats.
This is because treats are really important for dogs.
You can read about Dog Pet Treats importance in Singapore.
Anyway, we decided to to try raw food for their main meals daily.
At the end of the day, we decided that cats and dogs would be healthier eating raw meats.
After all, it is natural.
Raw meat diet may be more hassle and slightly more expensive than pet food, but your pets are healthier so you get to save on future vet bills...
Hassle-wise, I find preparing food for pets quite fun.
We prepare food in packs for weeks at 1 go, freeze them and thaw them 1 day before for their next day meal.
The powder on top is a calcium powder made from eggshells, mixed with supplements.
Kiekie enjoying her meal. She has been looking forward to dinner so much more now, compared to dry pet food...
Chewing up her drumsticks.
Sometimes I leave it up to her to eat on her own...
Maomao's turns to eat!!
The cat is picky eater. It takes ages for her to change her diet....
As they aged, I feel that the diet become more and more important for them. The cat now prefer soft food as no need to chew so hard.
One day, we will be old too =) Hope we can bring some joy to our dog and cat as they have brought us.
