The "Right" Career or the "Right" Person

A Fan Asks Mike Rowe For Life Advice… His Response Is Truly Brilliant
Mike Rowe from Dirty Jobs is an awesome guy. He can build or fix anything, he’s very entertaining, and has a great sense of humor. Mike also tells it like it is and gives great advice to others. A fan wrote him and asked him for some career advice:

___________________________________________________

Hey Mike!

I’ve spent this last year trying to figure out the right career for myself and I still can’t figure out what to do. I have always been a hands on kind of guy and a go-getter. I could never be an office worker. I need change, excitement, and adventure in my life, but where the pay is steady. I grew up in construction and my first job was a restoration project. I love everything outdoors. I play music for extra money. I like trying pretty much everything, but get bored very easily. I want a career that will always keep me happy, but can allow me to have a family and get some time to travel. I figure if anyone knows jobs its you so I was wondering your thoughts on this if you ever get the time! Thank you!

Hi Parker

My first thought is that you should learn to weld and move to North Dakota. The opportunities are enormous, and as a “hands-on go-getter,” you’re qualified for the work. But after reading your post a second time, it occurs to me that your qualifications are not the reason you can’t find the career you want.

I had drinks last night with a woman I know. Let’s call her Claire. Claire just turned 42. She’s cute, smart, and successful. She’s frustrated though, because she can’t find a man. I listened all evening about how difficult her search has been. About how all the “good ones” were taken. About how her other friends had found their soul-mates, and how it wasn’t fair that she had not.

“Look at me,” she said. “I take care of myself. I’ve put myself out there. Why is this so hard?”
“How about that guy at the end of the bar,” I said. “He keeps looking at you.”
“Not my type.”
“Really? How do you know?”
“I just know.”
“Have you tried a dating site?” I asked.”
“Are you kidding? I would never date someone I met online!”
“Alright. How about a change of scene? Your company has offices all over – maybe try living in another city?”
“What? Leave San Francisco? Never!”
“How about the other side of town? You know, mix it up a little. Visit different places. New museums, new bars, new theaters…?”
She looked at me like I had two heads. “Why the hell would I do that?”

Here’s the thing, Parker. Claire doesn’t really want a man. She wants the “right” man. She wants a soul-mate. Specifically, a soul-mate from her zip code. She assembled this guy in her mind years ago, and now, dammit, she’s tired of waiting!!

I didn’t tell her this, because Claire has the capacity for sudden violence. But it’s true. She complains about being alone, even though her rules have more or less guaranteed she’ll stay that way. She has built a wall between herself and her goal. A wall made of conditions and expectations. Is it possible that you’ve built a similar wall?

Consider your own words. You don’t want a career – you want the “right” career. You need “excitement” and “adventure,” but not at the expense of stability. You want lots of “change” and the “freedom to travel,” but you need the certainty of “steady pay.” You talk about being “easily bored” as though boredom is out of your control. It isn’t. Boredom is a choice. Like tardiness. Or interrupting. It’s one thing to “love the outdoors,” but you take it a step further. You vow to “never” take an office job. You talk about the needs of your family, even though that family doesn’t exist. And finally, you say the career you describe must “always” make you “happy.”

These are my thoughts. You may choose to ignore them and I wouldn’t blame you – especially after being compared to a 42 year old woman who can’t find love. But since you asked…

Stop looking for the “right” career, and start looking for a job. Any job. Forget about what you like. Focus on what’s available. Get yourself hired. Show up early. Stay late. Volunteer for the scut work. Become indispensable. You can always quit later, and be no worse off than you are today. But don’t waste another year looking for a career that doesn’t exist. And most of all, stop worrying about your happiness. Happiness does not come from a job. It comes from knowing what you truly value, and behaving in a way that’s consistent with those beliefs.
Many people today resent the suggestion that they’re in charge of the way the feel. But trust me, Parker. Those people are mistaken. That was a big lesson from Dirty Jobs, and I learned it several hundred times before it stuck. What you do, who you’re with, and how you feel about the world around you, is completely up to you.

Good luck -
Mike

PS. I’m serious about welding and North Dakota. Those guys are writing their own ticket.
PPS Think I should forward this to Claire?

Scott's Cod Liver oil nostalgic advert

If you grow up in the 70's, 80's.... you would remember this!

衣服本來剛剛好
怎麼現在扣不上
桌子椅子那麼小
小到坐也坐不了
成長成長我已成長 (比一比看, 谁比谁高!)
司各脫鳘魚肝油
陪伴我一起長大!

In English translation:
Clothes used to be just nice...
Now why can't I buckle them up
Tables and chairs are now so small
So small for me to sit...
Grow and grow, I have grown!  (Lets compare and see who is taller!)
Scotts cod liver oil
Growing up with me!

LOL- This is one traditional brand that we would all love.
You like the white cod liver oil, or the orange one?

This Beijing Hotel will make you LAUGH

A friend went to Beijing recently and was given this brochure by the hotel. It is precious.
She is keeping it and reading it whenever she feels depressed.
Obviously, it has been translated directly, word for word from Mandarin to English.

Getting There: Our representative will make you wait at the airport. The bus to the hotel runs along the lake shore. Soon you will feel pleasure in passing water. You will know that you are getting near the hotel, because you will go round the bend. The manager will await you in the entrance hall. He always tries to have intercourse with all new guests.

The Hotel: This is a family hotel, so children are very welcome. We of course are always pleased to accept adultery. Highly skilled nurses are available in the evenings to put down your children. Guests are invited to conjugate in the bar and expose themselves to others. But please note that ladies are not allowed to have babies in the bar. We organize social games, so no guest is ever left alone to play with them self.

The Restaurant: Our menus have been carefully chosen to be ordinary and unexciting. At dinner, our quartet will circulate from table to table, and fiddle with you.

Your Room: Every room has excellent facilities for your private parts. In winter, every room is on heat. Each room has a balcony offering views of outstanding obscenity! .. You will not be disturbed by traffic noise, since the road between the hotel and the lake is used only by pederasts.

Bed: Your bed has been made in accordance with local tradition. If you have any other ideas please ring for the chambermaid. Please take advantage of her. She will be very pleased to squash your shirts, blouses and underwear. If asked, she will also squeeze your trousers.

Above All: When you leave us at the end of your holiday, you will have no hope. You will struggle to forget it.

Morale of the Story- PLEASE GET A GOOD TRANSLATOR! =D
But this is the funniest stuff I've read in a looong time...

Some interesting foreign videography concepts

Singapore videographers are boring.
Creativity seems to be missing... sigh.

I admit I am totally not creative at all, so before any one of you scold me for criticising without providing alternative suggestions.... If I don't know how to cook chicken rice, doesn't mean I cannot complain that the chicken rice is not delicious.

Anyway, I did find some unique and interesting videos.
Its a pity that they are all based overseas.

For example you have this:- http://www.shoot-it-yourself.co.uk/
Video cams provided, for the bride/groom and their friends to shoot the videos on their own.
Out-of-the-box! From the UK.

Seriously, i think its a terrific idea. I already pitching this to a certain tech group to help me.
*pray that they will respond positively*

And another shoot-yourself company from the USA
http://www.storymixmedia.com/weddingmix/how-it-works-weddingmix-wedding-video.html

Theslowmotion booth, based in America. If you are interested, here they are:- http://www.theslowmotionbooth.com/

They look like having a smashing time. I did found a local company that does this, but unfortunately their editing sucks. Not going to use them. Just in case i'm biased, or for the lack of tastes, i did send the video links of the local products to a few friends, but they are all on line... its just not as fun.

And nothing for me in singapore.... sigh.
singapore, i knew i missed out something when I skipped my secondary arts classes.

April Fool's Prank

I forgotten to spread out my April's fool joke from my facebook to this blog... rats.

Anyway I am a big fan of prank, as long as no emotions are harmed... Pranks brighten up our days, make us laugh and makes life... less serious.

Big Fan of pranks.

This is also 1 reason why I love Google, which make it a point to make April Fool Jokes every year.
I was caught by their prank when they introduced "Google Print" that delivers email printed on paper... (yah.. that was an old joke)

BTW Gmail was launched on 1st April. It was meant as a prank-of-all-pranks.
Anyway google pranks another day... today just saw this April Day prank and thought it is a classic nice prank.

In fact, probably a heartwarming prank.

Be nice and the whole world will smile with you.
