Sex blogger Alvin Tan's scholarship terminated

Remember Alvin Tan and Vivian Lee? (previous blog post here, here and here as well as their Youtube video interview here)

Latest news is that Alvin Tan's scholarship has been terminated by NUS. (Straits times)

The National University of Singapore (NUS) has terminated the scholarship of sex blogger Alvin Tan.
The Straits Times understands from a source that the Asean scholarship holder was not expelled but will have to pay full, unsubsidised fees as a foreign student should he want to conclude his final year of studies at the NUS Law School.
The revelation comes on the same day that Parliament discussed the matter of Mr Tan's conduct. During the debate in the House, Education Minister Heng Swee Keat strongly condemned the exhibitionist behaviour of Mr Tan, saying that it was "reprehensible and unbecoming of a scholar".
Though the Minister did not reveal the details of the punishment, he said he was confident that the NUS management took the matter seriously and would do the right thing.

I would think that scholarship should not be tied to morals, because morals, especially morals to do with individual sexual behaviours are up to each of us.
I think sex is a private matter, but that does not mean others hold the same view.
Sexual morality is very subjective.
He choose to reveal his own sexual life, and that ought to be his own business. Scholarship is meant to encourage his academic success, and hopefully to spur on to his career/business success to produce better economic value to the country.
And after all, his 'crime' is a victimless crime.....

If you read through the rules, NUS only has the rights to discipline when a student does something on-campus, or off-campus but while representing NUS.
It is even more over the top when the Education Minister steps in to comment....

Then again, I guess where tax money is involved, the ministry has to be careful to consider the feelings of the public and I guess the public is still pretty much conservative.

Actually losing a scholarship is no big deal, especially from what I heard about Alvin running his own company now, a tech "daily deals" company.

His girlfriend, Vivian Lee, faces a lot more pressure and much more to lose....

Lee, 23, may be kicked out of her family home after "Sumptuous Erotica", the blog she shared with Tan, 24, made the headlines in several newspapers here and in Singapore.
"My mother gave me an ultimatum marry him or move out within a month," she said, adding that she was "a little scared" about the prospect.
Hope the family will be harmonious soon...

Here is a video of their interview with RazorTV previously, on his fascination with girls with V names, whether they are in love, how they know each other...
